The Government has agreed to a seafood sector agreement for migrant workers that covers the following:
- Fishing crew work visa
- Land-based seafood process workers
The conditions under the agreement include a cap on the number of migrant workers for each category as follows;
- Fishing crew work visa – 940 cap.
- Land based seafood process worker – 600 cap.
Seafood New Zealand facilitates the allocation process which opens in the beginning of September each year.

Mid-Year Re-allocation – Now Open
Seafood New Zealand has opened the process to re-allocate 9 foreign fishing crew and 64 land-based seafood process worker places that have been surrendered. Re-allocation priority is first to be given to operators who did not receive an allocation on 31 October 2023, and then to operators who had their initial request reduced due to the over subscription.
If you would like to be considered for an allocation, please download the relevant Expression of Interest Form and email to [email protected] as soon as possible, and by 5pm on the 31st of May 2024 at the latest.
If you received an allocation and have places you will not use before October 2023 and have not already informed us that these can be surrendered, please let us know so that they can be included in the re-allocation process, by emailing [email protected].
